My Y Story…
"It all started with some extra holiday cash in January this year, and I knew right away: I had to swim. The catch? I didn't really know how. Sure, I could frolic at the beach and in lakes, but actual technique? Not a clue. This sudden urge to swim wasn't just about getting in a large pool to splash around; I wanted to learn properly. If I was going to do this, I needed a coach. So, I jumped right in, signed up for a YMCA membership, grabbed the Aquatic schedule, and met Aubrey, the Y Swim Coach. Little did I know this decision would kick off not just a learning adventure, but also introduce me to an amazing, uplifting swim community that would change how I see fitness and friendship.
That first day at the pool is etched in my memory. It was a chilly, snowy January morning, around 6am if I remember correctly, and I walked in thinking, "You've got this, girl!" That confidence quickly gave way to awe as I realized I was surrounded by a diverse group of swimmers—from seasoned athletes, enthusiastic beginners, to committed water walkers. I felt inspired by their energy and dedication. I started chatting with these water enthusiasts, curious about their swim stories. Everyone had such unique stories about finding the Y and why they keep coming back. Their stories and encouragement became a big part of my journey, showing me that swimming here was about way more than just exercise—it was about belonging and growing as a person.
The sense of community at our Y's pool is truly special. Swimmers of all ages and abilities support each other, sharing lanes, tips, stories, and laughter. This collaborative environment, where everyone recognizes and celebrates each other's progress, no matter how small, is what sets our Y apart. It's not just about becoming a better swimmer; it's about becoming part of a community that uplifts and inspires. This is why I chose to be a member of our Y—it's a place where personal goals meet collective support, reminding us that there's so much good to be found when we come together in the spirit of growth, friendship, and fellowship. Shout out to all my aquatic swim mates – you are all inspiring and you make a difference!"
